Ban Tourism? Have Some Montanan’s Lost Their Ever Loving Minds?
There is always someone upset about something, that is life. But it seems as though there is one particular area that really grinds some people's gears.
When asked about THE SCARIEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN MONTANA, it was clear that some people really don't understand the difference between scary and necessity.
Comments kept coming in regarding how "scary" tourism is and how it is ruining the state. Fun fact...it's not.
Montana is home to multiple National Parks, National Battle Grounds, and other National amenities. Without tourism, those "Nationals" wouldn't be able to maintain their beauty. Then people would be mad that the roads are crap, the shuttle won't be free, and there will not be enough workers to assist the shops and guests. That sounds cool, right? No.
Think of all of the small towns that make Montana, Montana. The mom-and-pop shops rely on summer tourism to keep them working and providing for their families. I would put money on it, that they don't "hate" tourists, or think tourism is the scariest thing about Montana.
Think about how "scary" it would be if all of the towns that rely on tourism disappeared. What would that do to the state? I guess if you would like for the state to become full of abandoned towns, businesses, and homes then yes, let's keep hating on the tourists.
Our tourist season is short compared to a lot of the country that is home to warmer temperatures year-round. Is there such a thing as "over-tourism"? Absolutely. But for a state that has so much land and so few people, I don't think it's the end of the world to have a tourist season, let alone consider it "one of the scariest things about Montana".
