Is Montana A Safe Place To Live? Recent Data Shares New Insights.
Living in Montana is unlike living anywhere else.
We have long and crazy winters, and in the summer, we're literally invaded by millions of tourists. In fact, if you've never cussed while trying to make it home after a long day of work only to be slowed up by out-of-staters pulling RVs, then I question your legitimacy.
Of course, it's easy to understand why we're so popular amongst travelers. The beauty of this state is second to none. I'm always amazed at what a 20-minute drive will allow me to see. From beautiful mountains to serene rivers and creeks, people just can't seem to get enough.
A lot has been said in the last few years about all of the folks moving to Montana, and a lot of locals aren't happy with the Montana Migration, and now some new information suggests that there might be reason for that.
WalletHub released its annual survey of the safest states and to be frank, Montana didn't score well. The Treasure State actually ranks near the bottom when it comes to the states that are the safest. The following factors were used to determine each state's ranking.
- Personal and Residential Safety
- Financial Safety
- Road Safety
- Workplace Safety
- Emergency Preparedness
Based on the above criteria, Montana came in 40th place, scoring poorly on both Personal and Residential Safety as well as Workplace Safety. We weren't the only states that didn't have a great showing. Our neighbors over in the Dakotas didn't do too hot either.
While the data is certainly interesting, as a resident of the state I don't feel unsafe. Like many of my fellow Montanans, I practice my 2nd Amendment rights. In fact, data from World Population Review shows that over 65 percent of Montanans own firearms.
As far as workplace safety, Montana has its fair share of loggers, miners, and ranchers, and working in those elements can certainly bring a higher risk than say sitting behind a desk.
So what do you think? As someone living in Montana do you feel unsafe? Do you think the increase in population has led to more crime and unsafe conditions? Let us know by sending us a message on our radio station app.
