Watch Crews Plow Through ‘The Big Drift’ in Glacier NP
As Montana's Glacier National Park gears up for the busy summer tourism season, crews have been busy removing snow from the famed Going to the Sun Road.
Earlier this week the park released video of a snow removal crew working to clear "The Big Drift," while negotiating the edge of a cliff that runs next to the road. This stretch of road is historically one of the toughest to clear and according to the park, it's not as simple as just pushing snow off of the edge.
Officials say that the top layers of snow must first be scooped off and then holes left over from that work must be filled in order to create a stable platform. After that work is completed, the dozer and rotary plow can then get started safely.
The folks at Glacier National Park hope that people will share this footage with anyone planning to drive the road this summer, so that they can see all the work that is involved in clearing the scenic drive.
