A team from Montana State University will be featured on "Expedition Everest," which premiers tonight (Tuesday) on the National Geographic channel. The hour-long program will feature a MSU geologist, student, and researcher seeking answers inside a tube of sediment.

Mary Hubbard, a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences in the College of Letters and Science, and doctoral student Bibek Giri joined the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Everest Expedition to Nepal in the spring of 2019. The MSU team collected samples of sediment in the shadow of Mount Everest at the bottom of high-mountain lakes. It was part of an effort to study how climate change may impact the high Himalaya.

A portion of the program was filmed in Regents Professor Cathy Whitlock's Paleoecology Lab on the MSU campus in Bozeman and features lab manager and research associate Mio “Pico” Alt.

According to Hubbard, much of the episode follows the dramatic installation of the highest weather station on Everest.

Just inside Everest's notorious death zone, a team of climate scientists who specialize in extreme weather weigh their next move,” a tagline on the show website states. The site also includes a trailer for 'Expedition Everest'.

The program will be featured tonight at 8 p.m. Mountain time, and will also be available on the Disney+ streaming service.
