Gambling in Montana has a rich and long history. Gambling has had several changes over the years.
Poker tables and video machines have been allowed for decades. Recently, sports gambling has been legalized and regulated by the state. Montana wanted to keep local money within the state and avoid third-party websites like DraftKings and FanDuel.
Montana has seen millions of dollars from gambling yearly. Locals love to gamble. It's evident.
Whatever folks can't bet on in Montana, they will take a short trip to Las Vegas to play roulette, craps, and other forms of gambling not allowed in Big Sky Country.
Montanans would love to see more styles of gambling allowed, but the government has different plans.
Montana's Government Bans Sweepstakes Gambling
This bill could ruffle feathers, and we are the first to do it in America.
The Montana Legislature and Governor Gianforte have passed a bill into law banning sweepstakes gambling in Big Sky Country.
What is sweepstakes gambling? Sweepstakes gambling sites allow users to wager using free coins, but customers can purchase additional coins using money or cryptocurrency.
Then, you can cash in your coins for prizes or cash.
Why is this a problem? This type of gambling/casino is unregulated and unlicensed, meaning there is no reliability or punishments if you can't cash in your winnings.
Montana is the first state to ban this type of gambling. Violators caught face felony charges, fines up to $10,000, and up to 10 years in prison.
That's pretty steep.
Senate Bill 555 goes into effect on October 1st.
