‘Killing Gunther’ Trailer: The World’s Most Bumbling Assassins Try to Kill Arnold Schwarzenegger
I don’t like to pre-judge movies. I hate when people write-off a film sight unseen or blindly defend a movie before they’ve watched a frame of it simply because they think they know what it is, or they like the director or the property, or whatever.
That said, on the basis of this trailer, I am ready to declare Killing Gunther the greatest work of art in human history.
Hyperbolic? Eh, probably a smidge? But no more than that. Look at this trailer! It has Arnold Schwarzenegger as the world’s greatest hitman. It has Taran Killam (who is also the film’s writer and director) leading a team of assassins who are trying to kill Schwarzenegger’s Gunther. They include SNL vets Bobby Boynihan and Paul Brittain. The rest of the cast includes Aaron Yoo, Cobie Smulders, and Kumail Nanjiani. There are jokes about bazookas and terminating people. How can it not be the masterpiece of all masterpieces?
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
A group of eccentric assassins are fed up with Gunther, the world's greatest hit-man and decide to kill him but their plan turns into a series of bungled encounters as Gunther seems to always be one step ahead.
Since his return to acting a few years ago, Schwarzenegger has mostly stuck to darker thrillers that deal with themes like revenge, grief, and loss. Killing Gunther marks a major return for the actor’s sillier side, one best expressed in films like Kindergarten Cop and Twins. Will Killing Gunther be his first major hit in years? I mean, clearly, it should be.
