Finding a $2 bill is pretty cool, but most of them aren't worth a small fortune. Most $2 bills in circulation are worth $2, but there are a few exceptions. Many Americans collect coins and other forms of currency, and if they're uncirculated, they are usually considered quite valuable. Some uncirculated $2 bills are reportedly worth as much as $20,000.

The reason most people collect $2 bills is because they think they're rare and hard to find, but that's not the case. There are a lot of $2 bills tucked away in wallets, purses, and stash drawers. According to Market Watch, there are three ways to figure out if your $2 bill is rare.

What Sets Apart the $2 Bills That May Have Significant Value?

Here are three key factors to look for.

  • Serial Number
  • When the Bill was Printed
  • Condition

Older $2 bills are much more rare than newer ones.

What Serial Numbers Are the Most Valuable?

What we look at is fancy serial numbers. A serial number ‘1’ for a 1976 $2 bill would be worth $20,000 or more. But [for] a majority of those people holding 1976 $2 bills, they are only worth face value. There are very few that actually exceed face value.

Said Dustin Johnston, VP of Heritage Auctions.

There are quite a few high-value $2 bills, and the serial number is the key indicator. Collectors refer to some serial numbers as “solid” or “ladders.” A solid serial number is all the same digit, like 88888888888. A ladder number features digits listed in ascending order. 12345678910 is an example.

If you have a collection of $2 bills, you might want to pull them out and check the serial numbers because some of them are worth a lot of money. Sadly, most of them aren't worth more than face value.
