According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the surface of the Berkeley Pit is 1,780 feet deep, which is taller than the statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Our Lady of the Rockies combined.
When copper mining stopped in Butte, pumps were shut off and highly toxic water began to fill the Berkeley Pit. The water is very contaminated and acidic. Officials have worked to keep migratory birds from landing in the pit, due to the fact that the water is so toxic.
