An Insider’s Guide to Montana’s Under the Big Sky Festival
I've been lucky enough to attend the Under the Big Sky Festival almost every year since it debuted in 2019, and I can honestly say it's one of the best music festivals I've ever experienced. Between the incredible lineup, stunning mountain views, and laid-back Montana atmosphere, it's a weekend every music fan should experience at least once.
If you're heading to Big Mountain Ranch this weekend (July 17-19), here are a few tips to help you make the most of it.
First, study the daily schedule before you arrive. With dozens of artists performing over three days, there will almost certainly be times when two bands you want to see are playing at the same time. Having a game plan will help you avoid missing your favorite performances.
Whitefish has a population of only about 9,000 people, so expect restaurants and coffee shops to be extremely busy all weekend. If you don't want to wait forever for breakfast, make the 30-minute drive south to Echo Lake Cafe. You can thank me later.
While you're in northwest Montana, don't spend every waking hour at the festival. Take some time to explore the area. If you've never driven Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, it's one of the most scenic drives you'll ever experience.
Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the weekend. Hot temperatures and plenty of sunshine are expected, so drink plenty of water and take breaks when needed.
Headliners include Cody Jinks on Friday, Zach Top on Saturday, and Chris Stapleton on Sunday, but don't overlook the rest of the lineup. Some of the weekend's most memorable performances often come from artists you weren't planning to see.
Most importantly, be patient, respect the local community, and soak it all in. You'll be surrounded by thousands of fellow music fans in one of the most beautiful places in Montana. It's almost guaranteed to be three magical nights under the Big Sky.
