A female black bear was killed after attacking a campsite Monday, July 6th at 5 p.m. The bear entered a backcountry campsite about three miles from the Hellroaring Trailhead on the Montana/Wyoming border.

Three adults and two children were in the camp and sitting outside their tents at the time.  The bear approached an adult woman and bit her right arm and head causing bruises and minor abrasions according to a Yellowstone National Parks Press Release. Then the bear nipped at the hand of one of the children. The bear then moved to the campers' food, which had not yet been hung, and began consuming.

The bear was still consuming the food when Rangers arrived on the scene via horseback.  Decisions regarding the bear were made due to human safety concerns. Mainly because the bear entered the campsite, bit a camper, and received a food reward.

Yellowstone National Park reminds campers to never feed wildlife and to "keep all food, garbage, or other smelly items packed away when not in use. Stay 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves."
