‘Wonder Woman’ Has Surpassed That Elusive $400 Million Mark Domestically
Wonder Woman, if you can believe it, is still breaking records and defying explanations more than two months after its release. On Tuesday, the film broke past the $400 million mark domestically, now in league with such box office juggernauts as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Avengers, The Dark Knight, and, uh, Shrek 2.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that $400 million is a particularly difficult hurdle for a movie to clear in the U.S., but, given Wonder Woman’s wildly successful run in theaters so far this summer, we really shouldn’t be surprised. It’s the #1 movie of the summer here, having beat out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it’s also the #1 movie made by a female director.
THR also notes that Wonder Woman is Warner Bros.’ third-biggest movie domestically behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, which each quickly cleared $400 million in about a month. Wonder Woman is essentially carrying the DCEU at this point, with not only a huge box office gross but also overwhelmingly positive critic and audience reviews as well. A sequel was announced, pretty belatedly, at Comic Con, which will reportedly be set in the 1980s and might bring Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor back. Gal Gadot, obviously, will reprise her role, and Patty Jenkins is in talks to direct but hasn‘t officially been announced yet.
