If you decided to pack up all of your belongings and move to Montana from a different state, don't be surprised if you're greeted with the words "Go back to where you came from." Montanans aren't shy when it comes to expressing their frustration with transplants.

Montana is a great place, and those that live here prefer to keep it that way. They don't want it to change, and it's completely understandable. If you're new to Montana, don't take it personally, but to most residents, you're simply not welcome here.

Now, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've personally witnessed a lot of resentment towards out-of-staters. The influx of new residents in Bozeman has changed the city, and not necessarily for the better. Downtown is filled with high-priced boutiques and restaurants that the average person can't afford. Bozeman has officially become a haven for the wealthy.

So, why do so many Montanans hate transplants? I could spend all day listing different reasons, but I'm going to focus on some major issues that have often been blamed on newcomers.

5 Brutally Honest Reasons Why Montanans Don't Like Out Of Staters

  • Fear of Change: Most Montanans love Montana just the way it is. They don't want people to move here and try to turn in into the place they came from. If you move to Montana, keep to yourself and don't complain about the lack of conveniences that are common in larger cities.
  • Housing: People that have moved to Montana from out of state have created a housing crisis in much of the state. Most longtime residents can't afford to buy a home, and it's due to wealthy transplants buying up all of the real estate and land.
  • Politics: For the most part, Montana is a red state. It is something that many residents take great pride in. Most locals don't want liberal policies and legislation to ruin Montana. Even though Montana gets a ton of snow each year, the people that live here aren't fans of snowflakes.
  • Large Crowds: You can't really go anywhere in Montana without having to deal with crowds. Most of the public places in the state get overcrowded during the summer. It didn't use to be that way and if you ask any longtime resident, out-of-staters are to blame for it.
  • Bad Driving: Driving conditions in Montana during the winter months are downright treacherous, and people that have never driven in snow before can often make things worse. People that move from places like California move at a faster pace than most that live in Montana. Don't tailgate the person in front of you just because you're in a hurry. Be courteous and don't drive like an idiot.

Sadly, many of Montana's political figures aren't from Montana. The state is literally run by out-of-staters, so most of the complaints from locals fall upon deaf ears. Don't hate me, I'm just the messenger.
