Ask most hip-hop fans which rapper created their favorite album over the past year and a majority will be quick to mention J. Cole's name, which makes sense that his third LP, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, takes home the win for Hip-Hop Album of the Year in the 2015 The Boombox Fan Choice Awards.

The North Carolina native's project arrived without the usual promotional grind attached to it. Cole chose to forgo months of interviews with press and radio and released the album less than a month after he initially announced it. His strategy was unique considering he didn't release any singles before 2014 Forest Hills Drive debuted on Dec. 9. Even when the effort leaked a week early, his supporters still came through and helped him score a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart -- the third of his career.

With thirteen tracks featuring everything from the rapper detailing the beauty in the struggle ("Love Yourz") to sounding off about his greatness ("Fire Squad"), Cole delivers something for rap fans who appreciate substance over stale lyrics.

The Roc Nation rhymer had some stiff competition in the category. Earning over 74 percent of the fans' vote, Cole beat Wiz Khalifa's Blacc Hollywood, Royce da 5'9" and DJ Premier's PRhyme, Run the Jewels' Run the Jewels 2 and Common's Nobody's Smiling, to name a few.

Take a look at the percentage breakdown in the Hip-Hop Album of the Year category below to see how J. Cole fared compared to the rest.
