Montana law enforcement officials continue to investigate the homicide of Dustin Kjersem, who was found dead inside a tent near Big Sky, Montana. New information regarding the investigation has been released.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office provided an update on the investigation and asked for the public's help finding items believed to have been removed from the crime scene. Officials have not named a suspect.

On Saturday, October 12 at approximately 10:07 a.m., a caller reported a deceased man in a tent along Moose Creek Road, about 13 miles north of Big Sky. The caller indicated that a bear attack may have caused the death. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Dustin Kjersem of Belgrade, Montana.

Kjersem left Belgrade on Thursday for a weekend camping trip. He had plans to meet a friend on Friday, but never showed up. The friend found Kjersem dead inside of his tent on Saturday morning.

New Information Released About Montana Homicide Investigation

GCSO continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicide of Dustin Kjersem and appreciates the information that has been provided by the public. Multiple leads are being investigated.

Officials are asking people to be on the lookout for the following items that are believed to have been removed from the scene of the crime:

  • Estwing camp axe, blue and silver, likely with a 26” handle (see photo)
  • Remington 11-87 12ga shotgun, wood stock
  • Ruger Blackhawk .44mag revolver, blued 4 5/8” barrel, wood grips
  • Orange YETI brand cooler – Tundra 45 (see photo)
