Exotic Animals You Can Legally Own in Montana

Montana law defines an exotic animal as any species that isn’t native to the state. So, if you’re considering getting a non-native wild animal as a pet, you’ll want to check the laws first.

The other day, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a listing for bobcat kittens for sale. It caught my attention because bobcats are one of Montana’s most well-known native species, and it's also the mascot for Montana State University in Bozeman.
According to Montana state law, you can legally own a bobcat, but like with other wild animals, you need a permit.
If you want to own a bobcat, you’ll need a Fur Farm License from Montana FWP. Even if you’re not starting an actual fur farm, you need a permit to legally own one.
