The snowpack in Montana will be getting another welcome blast of fresh snow through this weekend, with well over a foot expected in many southern mountain locations.

This is an interesting storm front with most of southwest Montana being affected, but in different ways. Some mountain ranges and under a Storm Warning until Sunday morning and others are only in effect until Saturday morning. Up to 20" of snow is possible in some areas.

If you must travel though these areas, make sure your winter emergency kit is still well stocked in your vehicle. Check your headlights, windshield wipers, and wiper fluid levels before heading out. Heavy, wet snow will create visibility problems at times.

  • A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM FRIDAY TO 6 PM SATURDAY.
  • WHAT...Heavy snow possible above 6500 feet.
  • Total snow accumulations up to 3 inches below 6500 feet, with over 12 inches possible above 6500 feet.
  • WHERE...Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains and Northwest Beaverhead County.
  • WHEN...From 6 AM Friday to 6 PM Saturday.
  • IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible and tire chains may be required for some vehicles.
  • Those in the backcountry should ensure they have appropriate knowledge and gear and may want to consider alternate plans.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
  • The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1 or visiting the MDT Road Report website.

Although we've been experiencing some really nice weather for the last several days, recreating in the back country during this storm requires a high skill level and is not recommended for casual uses. Heavy, wet snow is expected and will be "dumping" at times.
