Thursday was already forecasted to be very windy across Montana, but of course the Livingston area had to kick it up a notch. There is now a short-lived Wind Advisory for the I-90 corridor, in effect until Thursday afternoon.

The trouble with wind issues around the Livingston area, is that when an advisory goes up - there's always a chance the MDT could detour I-90 traffic through town. This minimizes the chance of a semi truck blow-over.

  • A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON THURSDAY
  • WHAT...Southwest winds with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • WHERE...Beartooth Foothills and Livingston Area.
  • WHEN...Until noon Thursday
  • IMPACTS...Strong crosswinds will make travel difficult along Interstate 90 from Livingston to Big Timber and roads along the Beartooth Foothills.
  • PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
  • Use extra caution and consider postponing travel until winds subside, or take an alternate route.

There are different levels of concern when it comes to the National Weather Service and wind issues. This is how they issue their windy weather bulletins:

  • High Wind Warning: Take Action! Sustained, strong winds with even stronger gusts are happening. Seek shelter. If you are driving, keep both hands on the wheels and slow down.
  • High Wind Watch: Be Prepared! Sustained, strong winds are possible. Secure loose outdoor items and adjust plans as necessary so you're not caught outside.
  • Wind Advisory: Take Action! Strong winds are occurring but are not so strong as to warrant a High Wind Warning. Objects that are outdoors should be secured and caution should be taken if driving.
