Montana Winter Weather: What’s Right? What’s Wrong?

One of the joys of my job is that I am up and out while most of Bozeman is still asleep.

With this comes a lack of traffic, no line at the Town Pump, and a clear head as I travel into the job. Of course another thing I notice is the weather. While the day time temps remain solid, you can certainly feel a change in the air, especially during the early morning hours.

I will be the first to admit that I'm not a weather expert, but I feel like sometimes the folks telling me the weather aren't either.  I mean, do you know of another job that you can be wrong so much, and still stay employed...well, other than politics? In the last two weeks I've read it's going to snow like crazy, and then I've read that it's supposed to be a mild winter.

I mean, that's kind of covering your bases isn't it?

Here is an example, I came across an article from 3 days ago that says Montana could be facing and I quote "the roughest conditions".  Oh, and the keyword in all of that is...could.  According to the data, Montana long with several other northern states could be in for a long, cold, snowy winter.

What is the biggest winter threat to Montana?

They say the biggest threat for those of us here in Big Sky Country is long stretched of sub-zero temps and wind chills. So, even though there might not be large amounts of snow, apparently the cold temps are the biggest threats. I've lived in Montana for years, and the last two are the only two I can remember a non-white Christmas.

It seems to me that snow is what we need, but not a couple of big storms, we need a steady supply of snow throughout the season. Will we get it? Well, according to the experts either we will, or we won't.
