Eggs have been a hot topic lately, thanks to soaring prices and shortages. But that's not the only egg-related controversy—it's what's added to them that might surprise you. Fast food chains are all about making food cheap, quick, and, as we just learned, "stable."

We all know fast food isn't exactly a health food stop, and no one's expecting an organic, farm-fresh meal in the drive-thru. But that raises the question—what exactly are we eating?

At some fast-food chains, the eggs in your breakfast sandwich aren't just eggs... they're something else entirely.

Here are six fast food restaurants in Montana serving more than just eggs.

Starbucks

A convenient place to grab a quick breakfast is often where you buy your coffee, and Starbucks offers that option. I have tried several of their breakfast items, such as egg bites, wraps, and breakfast sandwiches, during travel. I know that they don't prepare any of it on-site, which makes it easy to grab and go. However, I also realize this means the ingredients are not very fresh.

Their eggs contain water, modified food starch, soybean oil, whey solids, and citric acid. They also add stabilizers for a creamy texture. Sounds like a "venti" size ingredients list.

Chick-fil-A

This breaks my heart just a little because it's my favorite fast food go-to. Chik-fil-A is the premier location to grab the best chicken sandwich, but turns out their eggs come with a chemical support system.

Instead of cracking fresh eggs, they blend them with water, soybean oil, citric acid, xanthan gum, annatto (food color), and "natural" butter flavor." The chicken chain has recognized the need to upgrade to heather options, and they have stated on the website "we've made a commitment to source only 100% cage-free eggs by 2026."

Dunkin' Donuts

Another popular breakfast spot, Dunkin' Donuts, adds a few extra things to their egg patty sandwiches. The primary ingredients are egg whites, yolks, soybean oil, and water, but it also includes 2% or less of cornstarch, salt, flavoring, xanthan gum, cellulose gum, and citric acid.

Other Restaurants that are serving up eggs with extra ingredients...

  • Burger King
  • Subway
  • Taco Bell (With specific menu items)

Whether this changes your breakfast choices or not, it's always good to know what's really on your plate. Fast food isn't meant to be a daily habit, but let's be honest—we've all grabbed a quick bite in a pinch!
