Great News For Montanans Afraid Of These Deadly Little Creatures.

Let's be honest, there are a lot of things in Montana that can kill you.

The weather, wildlife like grizzlies, moose, elk, and deer, the roads, plus it's hard to forget that we live on the biggest super volcano in North America. So, if you're living in Montana you should always be prepared and aware of your surroundings because you just don't know what you might encounter, or when.

However, I do have some good news for those that have a certain phobia and live in Big Sky Country.

If you are one of the millions of Americans that have a fear of snakes, you'll be happy to know that while we do have those slithery creatures living amongst us, there are only 10 different types of variations, and even better news is the fact that out of those 10, you really only need to worry about one.

According to Montana.Gov, there is only one venomous snake in the state.

"Montana’s only venomous snake is the Prairie Rattlesnake. This snake is classified as a Pit Viper"

Apparently, Pit Vipers are different than other venomous snakes as the venom affects their victim's blood after being bitten, while venomous non-Pit Vipers' poison affects the nerves.

Either way, it's not something most of us ever want to experience. If you're out and about, here are some tips to keep in mind to avoid being bitten by the Prairie Rattlesnake.

Snakes are not active with the temperature dips below 60 degrees
If hiking, make sure you have proper footwear. Shoes and or boots are preferred.
Making noise while walking (a walking stick is perfect) will allow snakes to know you're near.
Be careful around rock pikes, fallen trees, and other debris that could be a hiding place for the Prarie Rattlesnake.

Also, keep in mind, that chances are they're much more afraid of you than you are of them, having said that, be aware that the summer months carry a greater chance of encountering one.
