Cheers? Montana Is Ranked Near The Top For This Popular Activity.
I'm not sure if this reason to celebrate, or cause for alarm. Either way, it's an impressive number.
Here in Montana, we like to have a good time. Whether that be cheering for the Cats or the Griz, getting together with friends for a fun night out on the town, or just hanging out with some folks around a good ole Montana campfire. Montanans know how to have fun, and a whole lot of that fun might include an adult beverage or two.
So what's the big deal? I mean, a lot of folks like to get together and enjoy a drink, right? That's true, except most places don't seem to enjoy it as much as we do here in Montana.
In fact, when it comes to comparing Montana to other states, there are only two that consume more alcohol than Montanans do and that's New Hampshire and Vermont. So just how much do we drink here in Big Sky Country?
Well, to be honest, it's a lot.
Wisevoter took a look at the alcohol consumption for each state per capita for the year 2023 and according to their data, the average Montanan 21 is good for right around 48 gallons this year. This does include beer, wine, and spirits just in case you were wondering what the criteria was.
If you break it down into categories and where Montana ranks, it looks like this.
- 2nd in Beer Consumption
- 5th in Ethanol Consumption
- 13th in Wine Consumption
Oh, and it's not just a Montana thing, our friends next door over in North Dakota rank right behind us and come in 4th. When you look at the top 4 states, they're all cold-weather states where winter hangs around several months of the year, so does that have something to do with it?
Not to mention all 4 are some of the least populated states in the country. So does that mean that you're more likely to consume alcohol if it's cold and there aren't a lot of people around?
Hmmm. I'll drink to that.
