At first glance, this might not seem like such a big deal but underneath the surface this could have huge ramifications for Bozeman.

KBZK is reporting that the city of Bozeman could miss out on being defined as a 'metropolitan' area because of a possible change of that definition by the federal government. In the 2020 census, Bozeman is well over 50,000 residents and that means they should be moved from a 'micropolitan' to a 'metropolitan' but the federal government wants to change a 'metropolitan definition to be 100,000 residents.

At first glance, it doesn't seem that big of a deal for most of us but by changing their definition of how many residents make up a 'metropolitan' actually carry some big issues. For instance, when you are a metropolitan area you are qualified to receive money from the federal government to help out with many items of funding. From sewer to water to many other items of pressing need Bozeman needs help with.

One of the biggest things the funds can help is 'affordable housing' which has been a constant issue and struggle for the city of Bozeman. The thing is with federal funding they could potentially put plans in place to build affordable housing but now that is in jeopardy.

Listen, I am all for the city of Bozeman getting funding to help with this crisis because affordable housing is starting to become a giant issue that people keep ignoring and if they don't figure out this problem within the next few years then Bozeman is going to be in real trouble.
