Here’s Why Billie Eilish Sadly Couldn’t Accept Her Best New Artist VMA Win in Person
Billie Eilish was nowhere to be found at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards even though she won numerous awards, including Best New Artist. Instead, she thanked her fans with a pre-recorded video.
The 17-year-old also took home the coveted award beating out fellow nominees Lil Nas X, Lizzo, H.E.R., Ava Max and Rosalía. So where was she? According to People, she skipped the VMAs because she's in the middle of a European tour where she's scheduled to perform in Moscow on Tuesday (August 27).
Her absence didn't stop her from winning awards though – especially after the incredible year she's had. Not only did she release her album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, but she dropped a number of hit singles.
Last week, her song "Bad Guy" hit the No. 1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 chart after being released in March. She recently told Billboard she didn't expect the song to be such as success. In fact, she thought it was going to flop.
"What’s funny about it is I actually thought it would flop… because the chorus doesn’t have a hook – at least what we wrote as the chorus,” she said. "For some reason, people do like it and it’s huge now. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made. It’s my favorite to perform, it’s so fun. I’m so proud of that song."
Eilish was also nominated for Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing and Best cinematography.
