Big K.R.I.T.  was a member of the XXL Freshman 10 of 2011.  The annual list is interesting to watch as some of the picks blow up and take over the Hip-Hop spotlight. Others fizzle out.  But sometimes you find one that just gets it.  Big K.R.I.T. is that artist.  Thought provoking, calm, real, and not afraid to hit you with a banger from time to time. Big K.R.I.T.  has it all, but will that earn him mainstream success?

Wiz Khalifa, B.o.B, Kid Cudi and other names you've heard were all seen first by the mainstream public on this same list.  Big K.R.I.T. though, is possibly the most underground sounding of the bunch.

Krit chooses to use his gift of wordsmithing to describe the struggles he has been through and the trouble he sees in his community.  He doesn't flash his chain, brag about how much weed he smokes or the stacks of money he blows.  K.R.I.T. has found himself on a path not well worn by previous MCs. Rappers sometimes describe the struggle of life without money, making decisions when a rock and hard place seem to be the only 2 directions, and how to keep your dreams alive through it all.  Somehow K.R.I.T. brings his personal accounts to a whole new level of real.  He may have made it to the mainstream and the rap hustle has paid him some cash, but he still struggles with his thoughts.  Media would have you believe that money and fame fix all of your problems.  K.R.I.T. describes his dealings with the business, his on and off relationship with God and day to day living as an on going issue, which we can all understand at any level.

Heart is at the core of Big K.R.I.T. and you can feel it in his delivery.  His struggle has been difficult but he has kept his head above it, seeing the bigger picture the whole time.

This is what I hear in K.R.I.T.'s music.  I could be wrong, but it's worth your time to listen and come up with your own thoughts.

Big K.R.I.T. "As Small As A Giant" is my Banger this week.  Check it out on the air just after 3pm all this week.
