The city's temporary warming center has a home until the end of March -- a combination of buildings at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds.

Heather Grenier, special projects director for the Human Resources Development Council, said the warming center moved into the midway facility at the fairgrounds on Thursday and will remain in that and two other buildings until the end of March.

She said all the details as to cost have yet to be worked out, but "it sounds like the fairground is just wanting to cover its costs," such as utility and maintenance fees.

Another building at the fairgrounds, Exhibit Hall 3, has served as a warming area for the homeless for the past week.

The Greater Gallatin Homeless Action Coalition has raised $18,000 in private donations for the temporary center, and the city has also contributed $6,000, organizers have said.

In addition to providing a warm place for homeless men, women and children to sleep, the coalition is hoping to use the warming center as a way to collect and compile demographic and other information about the homeless population in the area.
