Despite such tragic and widely debated events involving guns over the past year, such as Sandy Hook, polls suggest no decline in gun purchases anytime soon. But perhaps movie producer Harvey Weinstein and Oscar-nominated actress Meryl Streep will change that, as the duo are teaming up for an anti-gun movie said to shake the NRA (National Rifle Association) to its core.

Visiting the Howard Stern radio show, as reported by Mediaite, Weinstein had a few choice words against gun use in America and the NRA: "I don’t think we need guns in this country. And I hate it," he said. "I think the NRA is a disaster area."

Following said statements, Weinstein was ready to take his stance to a new level, revealing to Stern his plans for a new movie:

I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll tell it to you, Howard. I’m going to make a movie with Meryl Streep, and we’re going to take this [the gun issue] head on. And they’re [NRA] going to wish they weren’t alive after I’m done with them.

UPDATE: Deadline reports that the title of the film will be 'The Senator's Wife' and will feature Streep in a leading role. It's said to "expose the NRA for their behind-the-scenes machinations of what Obama himself called 'intimidation' and 'lies’ that ended up defeating legislation that would have expanded background checks on gun sales."

Weinstein did let on that it will be a scripted film as big in scope as ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,' and will make people think about the next time they want to purchase a gun. “Gun stocks — I don’t want to be involved in that stuff. It’s going to be like crash and burn," he said.

Even in its early stages, this project is sure to get a blazing response from both sides of the gun debate. Thinking back to the Discovery channel's cancellation of 'American Guns' in light of the Sandy Hook shooting, or A&E's controversial 'Duck Dynasty' toting a line of firearms, strong lines were drawn in response.

What do you think? Is an anti-NRA movie like the one Weinstein describes needed?
