Will Smith Agrees to ‘Fresh Prince’ Reboot … ‘When Hell Freezes Over’
It seemed inevitable that the trend of TV revivals would eventually reach The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and indeed, some confusion erupted when Will Smith’s production company began development of a suspiciously-similar fish-out-of-water story. That never came to pass, but thankfully Smith now says he’d only consider a Fresh Prince revival “when hell freezes over.”
Per E! News, Smith quickly shot down the notion of Fresh Prince getting either a reboot or the Fuller House treatment, when asked by Margot Robbie on the Suicide Squad press tour. For the time being at least, it seems the Bankses are off the table:
Robbie: When will we finally see the Fresh Prince reboot?
Smith: I don’t think ever, like pretty close to when hell freezes over. Pretty close, like ‘we’re going to leave that one alone.’
It was around this time last year that Smith’s production house Overbrook Entertainment had begun developing a present-day take on Fresh Prince, one that “puts a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series.” Smith would have served as executive producer alongside partners James Lassiter, Caleeb Pinkett and Jada Pinkett-Smith. though the project was later revealed to be separate from Fresh Prince.
Seems we can safely put that one to bed, but if Suicide Squad reviews are any indication, might Smith get back to maxin’, relaxin’ all cool, shootin’ some b-ball outside the school before long?
