Deadpool topped the box office for the third weekend in a row, which is an impressive feat for any movie…but it helps when all of your competition arrives with a thud. Gods of Egypt, Eddie the Eagle, and Triple 9 all flopped in their opening weekends, making the continued box office victory of Ryan Reynolds’ foul-mouthed superhero all the more staggering.

Let’s just start at the top. Deadpool grossed $31 million in its third weekend, bringing its current haul to $285 million. It will break $300 million by next week, officially launching it into the upper tier of superhero movies. It was already the highest-grossing X-Men movie yet, but it’s setting its sights on another, bigger record: The highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. At this point, only American Sniper and The Passion of the Christ stand in its way. If the film continues to perform well in the coming weeks, it has a shot at toppling both, especially since it has already beat out the former at the international box office. In any case, the arrival of Zootopia next week should dethrone Deadpool and the upcoming Batman v Superman poses a real threat, but the film is unique enough, and well-liked enough, to weather that storm.

And that brings us to second place and Gods of Egypt, which bombed with a debut of only $14 million against a reported budget of $140 million. There’s a chance the international cash will keep this thing from being a complete and total disaster, but that opening is worse than that of Jupiter Ascending, a similarly budgeted movie that was considered to be one of the biggest box office blunders of 2015. Like that film, Gods of Egypt is really weird and hugely divisive — audiences and critics didn’t know what to make of it and the marketing was all over the place, all of which came together for a toxic combination.

The other two newcomers fared a little worse, but they did so on smaller budgets. Eddie the Eagle and Triple 9 opened in fifth and sixth place respectively, each grossing a little over $6 million. Both are flops, but both were made for modest budgets. In the end, they’ll just be misfires rather than gigantic bombs. In other words, they were lucky to share the top 10 with Gods of Egypt, which makes them look a whole lot better than they would have elsewhere.

The rest of the top 10 was a mixed bag. Kung Fu Panda 3 and The Revenant continued to showcase strong and steady legs, with the latter riding its Oscar nominations to $170 million. How to Be Single and Risen are big question marks — both are doing perfectly decent business, but it’s not yet clear if they will manage to do anything beyond break even. The Witch exists in a similar grey zone: It will probably break $20 million and drop out of the top 10, and without being an actual hit, that’s pretty strong for a movie with its budget. Meanwhile, Race continued to bomb and it should completely vanish by next week.
