Teenage Girl Banned from Prom for Not Having a Date
Having a prom date bail on you is humiliating enough, but imagine being told you couldn’t attend your prom solo. That’s exactly what happened to one teenager at Archbishop John Carroll High School due to a rule by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Amanda Dougherty, a 17-year-old junior, had already spent nearly $1,000 on attire, flowers and tickets when her date canceled at the last minute. But because of a stipulation where the prom is viewed as “a special social event where a date is required to attend,” Dougherty was told she couldn’t go.
Understandably, Dougherty felt slighted. “For them to say that we’re not good enough to go unless we have a guy standing next to us, it’s just kind of sickening,” she said.
Still, Dougherty isn’t about to accept all of this meekly, and intends to fight to have the rule changed for all students. At the same time, she and her father will speak to school officials and attempt to have the policy waived in time for the prom next week. Watch a news report on this latest prom drama below.
