Star Trek fans’ crushing uncertainty has at last come to an end, as CBS finally reveals a first look at Star Trek: Discovery. Ahead of the network's Upfront presentation, CBS reveals two members of the Discovery crew, and a very strange location.

Star Trek: Discovery producer and franchise heavy Nicholas Meyer unexpectedly let slip that Michelle Yeoh might be boarding the title ship, but trades are finally confirming. Yeoh won’t lead Star Trek: Discovery itself, but nonetheless play a major role with a separate vessel.

President Obama is the guest editor of the new Wired Magazine, and as part of his work for the publication, he shared his favorite science-fiction movies and television shows. Star Trek fans have waited years for the franchise to return to TV, and will wait longer still, it seems. Despite CBS initially scheduling the new Discovery series for a January 2017 bow, the newest Star Trek saga has been pushed back to May over production demands.

Some very cool news about this summer’s Star Trek Beyond, via the Australian newspaper the Herald Sun: They report that Beyond will reveal that John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu is gay. The character is also revealed to be “the loving father of a daughter with a same sex partner. And in typical trailblazing Trek fashion - it’s just not a big deal.” At least the daughter aspect fits with what little the previous Star Trek series revealed of Sulu’s private life; in 1994’s Star Trek Generations, Sulu’s daughter, Ensign Demora Sulu, serves as the helmsman on the Enterprise-B.

Bryan Fuller’s new CBS Star Trek has yet to confirm any real production details beyond the creative talent involved, but the streaming sci-fi series may yet explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations up north. We’re talking of Canada, of course, as rumor has it the new series will diverge from its predecessors with a Toronto production.

The tough thing about using someone else’s ideas to make money is that it’s not entirely legal. This lesson had to be learned the hard way this past weekend by Alec Peters, producer of an independent film titled Prelude to Axanar.
