A bill was recently introduced in the Senate that would require restaurants and food establishments to only give out straws when they are requested by the customer.

Senate Bill 120, introduced by Sen. Sue Malek, would be enforced by regular inspections of restaurants throughout Montana.

Environmental groups are in support of the bill as it would cut down on plastic waste in rivers, streams, and lakes around Montana. According to the bill, food establishments would be fined $25 for each offense but would have a maximum of $300 per year.

Personally, I don't use straws on a regular basis and think it's a great idea.

What do you think? Should the state of Montana pass a law that penalizes businesses that hand out straws when not requested by the customer?
