If this week's Billboard Hot 100 chart is any clear indication of forthcoming musical trends, it seems guitar-driven pop (be it weepy or aggressive) may be a leading sonic force in 2017.

Both Shawn Mendes and Niall Horan emerged on Billboard's Hot 100 this week, marking the first time their current singles "Mercy" and "This Town," -- landing at No. 17 and No. 20, respectively -- made the Top 20.

Could this sudden chart jump offer some foreshadowing for the pair’s future success as a potential duo? Back in September, Mendes ignited rumors that a collaboration between the two was imminent when he appeared on The Late Late Show With James Corden.

“Definitely,” he said, when asked if he'd collaborate with the former One Direction member. But, Mendes continued, their warring schedules have made it difficult to cement a time and place to write and record together.

“He’s awesome," the "Stitches" singer continued. "I’ve been talking to him for a long time but it's annoying, because I’ll be in London and like, ‘Niall, I’m here,” and he’ll be like, ‘Just landed in L.A.’ and vice-versa. When we get a second, I want to write with him a bunch, for sure."

May they soon collaborate and shoot to No. 1.
