You've got your roommates rounded up, you found a sweet place, and know the parameters of the lease.  You're stoked to be moving in and just want to get started.  Before bringing in all your crap there are a couple things to do that will save you money when it comes time to move out.

Things to do before moving in.

1. Do a walk through with the landlord noting anything and everything that is broken, dirty, marked up, anything.  If you don't they will charge you when you move out whether or not you know those things were done before you moved in.  I would suggest that you take pictures of anything that is close to wrong so you have proof.  Key things to look for: Dust on baseboards and door jams, markings and holes in walls, lights not working, oven and stove being clean.  Just a few things that you can hold the landlord accountable for when it's time to move out.

2. Pick the rooms before you move your stuff in.  Make sure that everyone is aware of the decision of who is where and the arrangement.  I've heard of people paying extra for a bigger room that has an attached bathroom or paying less for the smallest room.  I've never done this, but it's something that's done.  Just make sure the arrangement is done before you actually move in so everyone is on the same page, and avoid an argument at the beginning of your time together.

More than anything, I try to keep in mind that you will be moving out at some point, and that will suck.  Anything that you can do that will make your move out easier will be a huge help and maybe save you some money in the end.

That's about it. It's a stressful process but can be easier if you just keep thing organized and give yourself some time to find a great place and not hop in the first place you find.
