‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Producer Says Tom Cruise Has Been Training for ‘Mind-Blowing’ Stunt for a Year
Watching the Mission: Impossible movies is like watching Tom Cruise engage in a series of escalating dares. Like the Fast and the Furious franchise, each new M:I movie features a stunt scene more bonkers than the last and made all the more impressive by Cruise’s dedication to performing his own stunts (or as much of them as humanly possible). It’s hard to imagine how Cruise and returning writer / director Christopher McQuarrie will outdo Rogue Nation’s riveting plane sequence, but according to the producer of Mission: Impossible 6, they have something “mind-blowing” up their sleeves. How mind-blowing? Well, Cruise has been training for the stunt for a whole year.
Following the recent premiere of Life, which he also produced, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison gave Collider some exciting new details about Mission: Impossible 6 — mostly he’s just getting everyone real pumped for the next big stunt scene:
We’re thrilled. Chris is back, obviously, writing and directing after Rogue Nation. We could not be more excited about the character Henry Cavill’s going to play. And I will say after the Burj [Khalifa] we thought it was going to be impossible to top that stunt, and then Tom did the A380 for the plane. What Tom is doing in this movie I believe will top anything that’s come before. It is absolutely unbelievable—he’s been training for a year. It is going to be, I believe, the most impressive and unbelievable thing that Tom Cruise has done in a movie, and he has been working on it since right after Rogue Nation came out. It’s gonna be mind-blowing.
Under any other circumstances that might sound like hyperbole, but given the history of the Mission: Impossible franchise and Tom Cruise’s track record with crazy action scenes, I’m totally buying it.
Ellison also revealed that they’ll begin filming in April, with production taking place in London, Paris and New Zealand. Mission: Impossible 6 hits theaters on July 27, 2018.
