Lil Nas X Opens Up About Backlash He Received After Coming Out as Gay
Lil Nas X gave his first interview since coming out as gay publicly, during which he spoke about the reaction from fans.
Lil Nas X spoke with BBC Breakfast and said he felt like he was "opening doors for more people" and had nothing to hide after coming out. He also shared there was negative feedback and backlash on social media. Instead of being angry, he explained he will just "joke back with them."
Though he wants his fans to feel comfortable, he did express that being gay is "not really accepted in either the country [or] hip-hop communities."
"How big of a deal is that?" he asked. "Is it something that I was considering never doing ever, like taking to the grave or something? But I was like, I don't want to live my entire life — especially how I got to where I'm at — not doing what I want to do."
During the interview, Lil Nas X learned interview etiquette the hard way: He went viral online for leaving the interview and walking in front of the camera while blocking the hosts on live television. The hosts laughed it off and offered for him to stay.
In June, Lil Nas X came out as gay publicly via Twitter on the last day of Pride (June 30). He asked his fans to look at the lyrics to "C7osure" along with a reference to a rainbow (an emblem for the LGBTQ+ community) embedded in his album artwork. Miley Cyrus showed support for her "baby brother" coming out on her Instagram account.
