Jigsaw’s back, y’all. It’s been several years (seven, to be exact), but everyone’s favorite death-contraption-loving maniac has returned — well, sort of, anyway. The first trailer for the latest installment in the Saw franchise has arrived, promising to reclaim Halloween with another round of gory puzzles, a host of fresh victims, and plenty of those classic convoluted plot twists. Let the games begin?

Update: Lionsgate has also released a series of character posters featuring Jigsaw’s new “disciples.” Check ’em out below.

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Jigsaw, the eighth installment in the Saw series and the first since 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter (which was clearly not the final chapter, by the way). Perhaps the most striking thing about the trailer is that it doesn’t look nearly as gory as its predecessors, but maybe they’re just saving all that blood and goo for the theatrical experience. If you haven’t seen a single Saw film, you might want to rectify that before seeing Jigsaw because, although it’s a reboot of sorts, it’s definitely continuing the wacky, exceedingly complex mythology of the first seven films.

Spoilers for those who haven’t seen the Saw movies!

Tobin Bell’s eponymous macabre mastermind died a few films ago, and yet somehow he’s back — in voice / spirit, anyway. It looks like someone is carrying on his legacy, which would make this another Legacyquel. (The original title for Jigsaw was Saw: Legacy.)

Here’s the brief synopsis for Jigsaw from Lionsgate:

One of the highest grossing horror franchises of all time is back, taking the Jigsaw killer’s signature brand of twisted scenarios to the next level.

Jigsaw stars Laura Vandervoort (Smallville) and Hannah Anderson (Shoot the Messenger), and was directed by Michael and Peter Spierig (Daybreakers) from a screenplay by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D) with original Saw creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Hopefully the involvement of those last two names is a good sign.

And here are the new character posters, as promised:

Jigsaw hits theaters on October 27 because as the old saying goes, if it’s Halloween, it’s Saw.
