Montana may have its fair share of pristine mountains and lakes, but they're located in a very small portion of the state. Most of Montana is flat and ugly. In eastern Montana, every mile practically looks the same. It's almost as bad as North Dakota.

If you think Montana looks like one big post card, you're wrong. Once you travel east of Billings, you get an idea of what most of the state looks like. Miles upon miles of lonely desolate desert. The truth is, most of Montana doesn't look like what you see on TV. We see thousands of pictures of Yellowstone and Glacier, but those pictures are incredibly misleading. Nearly 75% of the state is a flat wide-open wasteland.

So, the next time your friends tell you how beautiful Montana is, they aren't telling you the full story. Both eastern and western Montana contribute to the state's unique character, but you don't hear much about eastern Montana because there isn't much to brag about, unless you're partial to wide-open empty spaces.
