Many mining towns in Montana disappeared after the mining boom of the late 1800s. However, you can still see remnants of several of the towns. In the town of Wicks, visitors can explore a abandoned railroad tunnel that runs underground for over a mile.

Bannock Ghost Town and Garnet Ghost Town are two of the most popular in the state.. Garnet is the best-preserved. Another ghost town that is well-preserved is Elkhorn Ghost Town between Helena and Boulder.

Elkhorn Ghost Town in the Elkhorn Mountains is one of Montana's most-visited ghost towns. In the past 30 years, the population of the town has grown from zero to 12. The mountains surrounding Elkhorn were once rich with silver, and a huge vein was discovered in 1870. Due to precious silver being discovered, Elkhorn became a boom town and miners from all over the world flocked to Montana to strike it rich.

Elkhorn features excellent examples of frontier architecture. Two of the highlights include the historic Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall.If you want to plan a trip to Elkhorn Ghost Town, it's not hard to find.

From Bozeman, take I-90 west towards Whitehall. Take exit 256 towards Cardwell/Boulder. Turn right onto MT-69 N. When you reach Lower Valley RdElkhorn RdUsf 258, take a right and follow the road until you reach Elkhorn.
