Is winter in Montana harsh?

That kind of depends. Some years are worse than others; however, there are a few things you need to be aware of, and there are some things you can do to prepare yourself for what is to come.

  • Vehicle Emergency Kit - This is so important to have. You need to make sure that you have warm clothes, blankets, and snacks. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a pass somewhere in freezing temperatures without all the essentials.
  • Proper Winter Wear - For some folks, they will overspend on this, OR not get the items they need. I'm not here to tell you how to live your life, but remember, function over fashion. You're going to want to make sure that you purchase items that actually work
  • Driving the Proper Vehicle - You need to tread lightly here because locals get defensive. The truth is, Montana isn't the best at cleaning their roads during the winter. Now, if you were to bring this up, you are likely to hear the old "go back to where you came from" line. If you're looking for a car/truck/SUV to get you through the winters in Montana, anything with all-wheel or four-wheel drive with spiked snow tires will work great.
