In case you weren't aware, there is a big lottery drawing tonight with the "Mega Millions". The current jackpot is 800 million dollars (cash option 401.8 million)

Chances are, most of us have spent some time daydreaming about what we'd buy if we were ever to win a Powerball Jackpot. Some would pay off bills, take a trip, or buy a new car.

For me, it's simple, land, then build a house and a barn, and inside that barn, I would stock it with muscle cars, and underneath I would have an indoor shooting range, with a go-cart track out back. (I've given this some thought)

Of course, no one ever wins the Powerball here in Montana. It's normally someplace in California or back East. Or some little podunk town in the middle of the Bible Belt where the winner is pushing 90 and plans to leave some to the church and her grandkids.

While many of us dream of what we would buy if we won, several of us don't buy the ticket, or if we do, we wait until the jackpot is so high that everyone else has a ticket as well.

Has Montana ever had a Powerball winner?

The answer to that question is yes. We've had multiple winners with the biggest happening back in 2010 when two people split a jackpot of 48 million dollars.

However, some states seem to be more on the winning end than others. The Top 5 states when it comes to the most Powerball winners since 1992 are as follows:

  1. Indiana
  2. Missouri
  3. Pennsylvania
  4. Minnesota
  5. Kentucky

So the idea that all of the winners come from California or the East Coast seems to be a bit of an exaggeration. Until you look and see that The Top 5 states with the biggest jackpots are as follows:

  1. California
  2. Michigan
  3. Washington
  4. Vermont
  5. New Jersey

So while Montana might not be the best place to get rich by playing Powerball, it's also not the worst. Plus, you know what they say, you can't win if you don't play.
