Hiker Dies Near Ousel Falls, MT: Locals Step In To Help During Emergency
Ousel Falls Trail is known for its beauty and easy access, especially this time of year. It is one of Gallatin County's go-to spots for a hike. It follows alongside the South and West Forks of the Gallatin River and ends at a beautiful waterfall.
But on June 30th, just after noon, it became the site of a heartbreaking emergency.
At 12:22 p.m., Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue—Big Sky Section—was called to respond to a report of cardiac arrest on the trail. CPR was already underway, thanks to fast-acting bystanders who didn’t hesitate to jump in and help. The incident happened about half a mile from the trailhead.
Rescue crews, deputies, and the Big Sky Fire Department made their way in quickly. What they found was a trail community doing everything right—some helping guide responders in, others continuing CPR, and many offering support to the victim’s loved ones.
Despite every effort made on scene and during the transport back to the trailhead, the 66-year-old man, identified as Mark Hammons of Kentucky, sadly did not survive.
Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer expressed his gratitude to the public for their selflessness and swift action. He also acknowledged the SAR volunteers who dropped everything to respond with urgency, bringing in the necessary equipment and doing their best in the situation.
He closed by offering heartfelt condolences to Mark’s family. It was a tragic and unexpected loss.

It’s easy to take a peaceful day on the trail for granted. But when unexpected tragedy strikes, it's clear just how strong this community is. To everyone who stepped up, you made a difference. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the incident.
