Christmas is over, so some of us may be putting away the decorations, including taking the tree down. As many people have opted to have an artificial tree, like me, some still keep the tradition of having a real tree. At the end of the holiday season, there is always the question, "what do we do with the tree now"?

Instead of putting your tree in the dumpster next to your apartment building along with 50 other tenants, or next to the garbage can on garbage pick-up day, there is a proper way to dispose of it.

The City of Bozeman has announced on its website that the tree disposal sites are now open. The Forestry Division recycles the old Christmas trees as a courtesy to us residents, then uses the resulting compost as organic cover at select sites.

There are three different locations available as drop-off sites:

1. The lower parking lot of the Softball Complex on Haggerty Lane (entrance on Haggerty).

2. Christie Fields (enter off East Mason Street, just east of the playground).

3. Gallatin County Regional Park - (entrance on West Oak, drop site is near the BMX bike area)

If you are using a drop-off site, there are a couple of guidelines you should also follow in order to make the disposal quick and effective for the Forestry Division workers.

1. DO NOT cut the tree into smaller pieces, as the equipment more easily manages whole trees.

2. Trees are going to be recycled into natural compost/mulch. Make sure to remove all ornaments, lights, wire, garland, etc.

3. Wreaths and garlands are not accepted. The material can NOT be chipped for mulch. Please dispose of these items properly.

4. If you are a commercial business with excess inventory, this is NOT for your use. This is for residential use only.
