In the beginning, there were illegal street races and high speed heists, and Vin Diesel looked upon that which had created and saw that it was good. But as the franchise continued, the stakes became a little more… let’s say a little more insane. Cars parachuted out of the sky. Characters leapt their vehicles between skyscrapers. Tanks exchanged missiles with a submarine. As each movie has progressively upped the wow-factor of the franchise, there seems to be only one natural outcome for the Fast and the Furious family: they’re definitely going to head into space.

Fans have long argued over whether the Fast and the Furious franchise should pull a Moonraker and have their ragtag group of outlaws race across the moon  —  for my part, I’m decidedly in the pro-outer space camp  —  without knowing if that was even on the franchise’s radar. But now, thanks to an interview with series writer Chris Morgan in Uproxx (via Heroic Hollywood), we finally have our answer:

I get all versions of that question. I get, ‘Are you going to space?,’ and, ‘Please, God, tell me you’re not going to space because you’ll lose me if you do’ … Look, no plans for it right now, so hopefully people will be good with that. But, never say never. If we came up with the perfect thing and it made sense, it will be awesome.

In the interview, Morgan jokes about a crossover event between Diesel’s Pitch Black character Riddick and Dominic Toretto, and everyone has a nice little chuckle about the idea, but this got me thinking. No storyline or special effect is off the table when it comes to the Fast and the Furious franchise, so why not turn it into the Vin Diesel cinematic universe? Toretto joins forces with Riddick and xXx’s Xander Cage to fight an alien invasion? Throw a little Groot into the mix and you’ve got yourself a Vin Diesel quorum. I’m pretty sure you’re sitting on a billion dollar movie idea, Paramount. Jump to it.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for The Fate of the Furious:

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game — and the rest of the crew has been exonerated — the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

The latest adventure of Toretto and family  —  which probably won’t take place in outer space  —  will hit theaters on April 14, 2017.
