NBC Montana reports the Polson Police Department is warning locals about a new scam circulating in their area and other parts of Montana.
The scam is simple. Individuals have received phone calls accusing loved ones or relatives of serious legal trouble or arrested for crimes. The caller will ask the person to transfer money via Bitcoin through a cryptocurrency ATM.
Why is this scam interesting?
Cryptocurrency is hard to track when funds get transferred, and there's a solid chance the victims would never be able to recover their money.
Also, cryptocurrency ATMs are relatively new to Montana and have select spots.
It's an inventive way to scam locals.
Tips To Avoid Scams
Montana Police Departments warn citizens they will never ask them to pay with gift cards or cryptocurrency for fundraisers or to have their loved ones released from jail.
If you think the person you are talking to is not on the level, hang up your conversation and call your local Montana police department to double-check.
