There is good news and bad news.

The REAL ID Act will soon be in effect so that state issued drivers licenses and identification cards are up to federal guidelines.

Montana apparently has drivers licenses that are not up to code. Residents have had several extensions and last one was set to expire on December 31, 2018, but there is good news.

Montanans now have until October 1, 2020 to obtain a REAL ID. At that point, if you do not have a passport, you'll need a REAL ID to board a domestic flight.

Starting January 2019, the State of Montana will be issuing Montana ID's that fall in line with the REAL ID Act and be up to code.

Residents can make appointments to apply in person for a REAL ID at their local Department of Motor Vehicles office.
