‘Venom’ and ‘Silver and Black’ Will Take Place in the Same Universe as ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

For months now, we’ve assumed that any possible Spider-Man spinoffs would exist in a world separate from that of Spider-Man: Homecoming. With Sony and Marvel weaving a complicated web of licensed properties and revenue sharing, the safe bet was that Sony would choose to build up its own parallel world independent of Marvel’s, giving them complete ownership of those characters and their events without having to plug into a larger established canon. This seemed to be confirmed by Marvel boss Kevin Feige earlier this week, when Feige said in no uncertain terms that Venom would not be invited to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disappointing for some, curious to others, but on the surface, it did make sense.

Of course, all that was before Amy Pascal threw a giant wrench in things by admitting that Venom and Silver & Black might actually crossover with Spider-Man: Homecoming after all. In a recent interview  —  and with Feige sitting right next to her  —  Pascal admitted that their two Spider-Man spinoffs were very much so in the same universe as Marvel’s Spider-Man movie. Here’s the clip and transcription:

Well, both movies will all take place in the world that we are now creating for Peter Parker. They’ll be adjuncts to it, they may be different locations, but it will still all be in the same world. And they will be connected to each other as well.

Huh. When asked if there was a chance that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would appear in either the Venom or the Silver & Black film, Pascal smiled and said, “There’s always a chance,” so I guess it’s time for us to blow up months of fan theories and get back to work on figuring out this Marvel/Sony thing? On paper, what Pascal describes seems pretty logical: the comic books themselves have always walked a fine line between Avenger Spider-Man and the world of Spider-Man, local New York superhero, so Sony could parse out the various parts of Peter Parker’s life and choose to focus on a different world. Just when we thought we had all this figured out, Pascal has us scrambling to rethink what we thought we knew about Sony and the MCU. Man, these superhero films are going to be the death of us.
