The Flash’s big screen debut finally has a director.

Warner Bros. Barry Allen solo project is in negations with Dope director Rick Famuyiwa to helm the new superhero movie, according to Deadline. The film, which will star Ezra Miller as the titular superhero, will be the first big budget project for the 42-year-old Nigerian-American filmmaker, also known for 1998’s The Wood, 2002’s Brown Sugar. But Famuyiwa’s 2015 Sundance hit about a geekly high schooler living in ‘90s Los Angeles was a festival favorite and earned him wide acclaim. The director has also garnered some Emmys buzz following his HBO movie Confirmation starring Kerry Washington.

We recently reported rumors that Famuyiwa would helm a DC movie after Batman News noticed the director followed a handful DC-related twitter accounts and had been followed back by Geoff Johns, the DC Films co-chief. That seemed like a lot of guesswork to conclude the Dope filmmaker would collaborate on a DC project, but it turns out keeping an eye on Twitter activity is a pretty smart move for reporting. (Now go set a bunch of Google alerts on every other indie filmmaker without a big studio movie.)

Over the past year, The Flash solo movie has passed through a few directors’ hands. The LEGO Movie duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller were originally tapped for the project. Then Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith wrote the script for the movie based on a treatment by Lord and Miller. Grahame-Smith was expected to make his directorial debut with The Flash before exiting for “creative differences.” Now it’s unclear whether the script will undergo a rewrite with Famuyiwa on board.

Miller already made his brief debut as The Flash in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice and is expected to appear in Justice League, Part One on November 17, 2017. Famuyiwa’s Flash solo movie is slated to open March 16, 2018.
