The official Twitter account for ‘Venom’ shared the first photo from the set, featuring Tom Hardy having a laugh.

Tom Hardy’s not taking it easy on himself these days. He’s currently appearing in Dunkirk, where he spends the entire film stuffed into a cramped cockpit while frantically evading instant death from above. And today brings the news of a new major project for the esteemed actor, one that will test his mettle with even more extreme conditions. If you thought one perilous beachside aerial attack was intense, then just you wait.

In the middle of their profile of Sony, Marvel, and their unique arrangement sharing the character of Spider-Man in both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, The Hollywood Reporter dropped a fairly major detail about the upcoming Venom film that Sony is developing alongside their Spidey franchise: Carnage will appear as a villain in the film.

Is Tom Hardy doing OK? I mean, financially? After years of alternating between prestige films (The Revenant, Dunkirk) and more idiosyncratic projects (Legend, The Drop), Hardy seems to have accepted a streak of surprisingly mainstream blockbuster roles. After being attached to Ubisoft’s video game adaptation Splinter Cell for several years, Hardy recently shocked fans by accepting the title role in Sony’s Venom spinoff. And now, perhaps most surprising of all, is the rumor that Hardy is very close to signing on for the role of Jafar in Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake. At this point, maybe we should create a GoFundMe for whatever gambling debt Hardy seems to have racked up.

In news that clearly came from the farthest depths of left field, Tom Hardy has been cast as the lead in Venom, Sony’s upcoming film about the famous Spider-Man villain. That’s not all: Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will direct the movie, which is reportedly not a spinoff from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but a standalone project of sorts. Oh, and that’s still not all: Sony has shared an official announcement photo featuring Hardy in one of his classic Hardy-selfie poses, sporting a Venom t-shirt — in case you missed the point.

It doesn’t take much to imagine what a Christopher Nolan war film might be like — epic, visually stunning, and supremely intense. Dunkirk seemingly checks off all of those boxes and then some in the first full-length trailer for Nolan’s highly-anticipated new film, a historical period drama that looks surprisingly claustrophobic given the open setting. Featuring an excellent ensemble of stars (including Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance), Dunkirk doesn’t feel like your average summer film, which has us all the more excited to see it in July.

By the sounds of it, War Party could be the title of a fun satire that parodies war movie cliches. Or it could be a black comedy where Tom Hardy plays the owner of a small party supplies store that suffers once the locals start buying their birthday and baby shower decorations on Amazon. But War Party, a new project purchased by Netflix for seven figures, is neither of those things – one can dream! – but a historical film about Navy SEALs.

Last month, it was announced that Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum were in talks to team up for Triple Frontier, a film set in the crime-ridden border zone between three South American countries. It looks like they’re not only both a done deal, they’re also getting a third member to round out the cast: Moonlight and Luke Cage star and recent SAG Award winner Mahershala Ali.

While all the parkour in the world couldn’t save Assassin’s Creed from pretty low returns at the box office, Ubisoft is moving forward with its next potential franchise-starter video game movie. Splinter Cell, based on the series of games and novels about a black-ops agent in a fictional NSA subdivision, is considered one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises, along with Assassin’s Creed, and way back in 2012 Tom Hardy signed on to play protagonist Sam Fisher in the movie. It’s been a while since we’ve heard news about the movie, but it look like Ubisoft is moving ahead with production. One of the producers, Basil Iwanek, says that they’re going for a totally original action film that’s less of a video game movie and more of a high-octane thriller.
