The West Coast has won. The N.W.A.-inspired film Straight Outta Compton continues to break records as it becomes the highest-grossing music biopic.

The effort tops the Johnny Cash picture, Walk the Line, and Ray Charles' biopic Ray, according to Box Office Mojo.

The F. Gary Gray-directed film, which depicts the rise of the West Coast hip-hop group N.W.A., has remained No. 1 in movie theaters for three weeks straight, gaining over $134 million.

And despite being released with other big pictures such as Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and War Room, Straight Outta Compton has held its own. It also grossed high numbers during its opening weekend with $60 million. Not bad at all for a movie with a $28 million budget.

The film's success certainly comes from the established fan base created by N.W.A. and repeat watchers. According to Universal, statistics obtained by the Los Angeles Times, 51 percent of ticket buyers were younger than 30, 46 percent were black and an estimated 52 percent of the audience were female. Also, even though the movie is based on the group that put the West Coast and gangsta rap on the map, Atlanta held the title for highest-grossing theaters followed by nine theaters in Southern California.

The reign of Straight Outta Compton, starring Ice Cube's son O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell, continues, which means more musical biopics may be underway, causing some competition for the superhero movie genre.
