FX’s Sons of Anarchy has retired to the garage long enough that creator Kurt Sutter has been mostly working in private, though we may soon have something to show. The proposed Mayans MC spinoff is gearing toward production, and may return one of the original series’ Mayan stars.

Take this with a grain of salt for the moment, but Sons of Anarchy star Emilio Rivera may have confirmed over Instagram the potential to reprise his former role as Mayans president Marcus Álvarez for the Elgin James-written spinoff. It isn’t 100% clear if Rivera’s role is a direct continuation of his Sons of Anarchy character, or perhaps something more advisory, but see for yourself:

Previously, FX issued an official Mayans MC script order with James both writing the pilot script and producing. According to the official description, Mayans MC will be a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.”

Last we heard, the spinoff was set in the present day, potentially allowing for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters. Casting and production confirmations could arrive in the coming weeks, but does the Sons of Anarchy franchise have enough gas for another go with the Mayans MC?
